<br />
Just for fun, we tried making a Snow Queen dress with the <a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2014/02/super-easy-princess-dress.html" target="_blank">two T-shirt method</a> I first used to make Alice's Rapunzel gown.<br />
<br />
I don't know if I like it quite as much as I liked the original Rapunzel version, but it came out all right, I think - Alice was really happy, anyway. Especially with the train.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifkMLHMf7gbGgjynJJYLHMjN8BOPUImbohyerbNjhsQg5n6S6ubxwbnIohg8FSU4xUXEOvLBOFtXo6FsRSVc2egw9BdEgo1iWkCvJbPBu6xIatGvAr9ywwR5A4znw4BtLto5Tmve7-kiUQ/s1600/_MG_1555.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifkMLHMf7gbGgjynJJYLHMjN8BOPUImbohyerbNjhsQg5n6S6ubxwbnIohg8FSU4xUXEOvLBOFtXo6FsRSVc2egw9BdEgo1iWkCvJbPBu6xIatGvAr9ywwR5A4znw4BtLto5Tmve7-kiUQ/s1600/_MG_1555.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The idea, again, is that the dress doesn't have to be an exact replica to be dress-up perfect. It just needs to be sort of the right color with a few of the right details. That's all an able make-believer needs.<br />
<br />
I like that these dresses are inexpensive, easy to make and easy to get in and out of. And, this time, Alice got to help a little bit with the sewing, which was really fun too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxKNwA1Ru41oXimLfguoVW_aY_AkKGR3t0tBQdZZoZ6snk9LRCarX1fwoe0cncraPbxZdTBCtnLjtGQKLJ3nYM5e5fsrqhNj7CwHQK5I_tMplyO4LS_wbo8uuqooKHH7N69z4TGfU0ORa8/s1600/snowdresselesa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxKNwA1Ru41oXimLfguoVW_aY_AkKGR3t0tBQdZZoZ6snk9LRCarX1fwoe0cncraPbxZdTBCtnLjtGQKLJ3nYM5e5fsrqhNj7CwHQK5I_tMplyO4LS_wbo8uuqooKHH7N69z4TGfU0ORa8/s1600/snowdresselesa.jpg" height="280" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here's what you need:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>A T-shirt sized to fit your child</li>
<li>A T-shirt sized to fit an adult (I used a women's XL)</li>
<li>Basic sewing supplies</li>
<li>Embellishments - if you want to add Elsa's cape/train thing, try half a yard of tulle or something sparkly-shimmery. We found the material for ours in the remnant bin at the fabric store.</li>
<li>Quarter-inch thick elastic</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisDa36UFygQcJdwB-3Vv9PF1OpX_GvHBxQJIeXAx9LamK67r6n5NNtly0YU7ZRPwp9ifZ0qmaMtFydWwtcw7Qm9pTsj151RRxuzFTF8eoeH3KVOW6hPz1mHCS2nZMPvMmenelK1GHMIilA/s1600/2014-07-26.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img alt="diy elsa dress" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisDa36UFygQcJdwB-3Vv9PF1OpX_GvHBxQJIeXAx9LamK67r6n5NNtly0YU7ZRPwp9ifZ0qmaMtFydWwtcw7Qm9pTsj151RRxuzFTF8eoeH3KVOW6hPz1mHCS2nZMPvMmenelK1GHMIilA/s1600/2014-07-26.jpg" height="300" title="diy elsa dress" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And here's what we did:<br />
<ul>
<li>First, cut across the child-sized shirt about an inch below where you'd like the waistline of the dress to be. For us, this was a couple of inches below the arm openings. That's your bodice.</li>
<li>The adult-sized shirt will become the skirt. Decide how long you want it to be, then cut accordingly across the top of the shirt. For Alice's dress, I cut just under the arm openings.</li>
<li>Depending on the difference in width between your bodice and skirt pieces, you might need to gather the skirt a bit. If so, do that now. Then, if your dress is going to include the cape, pin that piece of fabric to the back of the skirt. <i>(In retrospect, though, I kind of wish I had made the cape detachable, so something to consider)</i>. Finally, sew bodice and skirt together, right sides facing, with a one-inch seam allowance. </li>
<li>Instead of trimming the excess fabric from the seam you just sewed, stitch another line within the seam allowance, about halfway between the original seam and the raw edge - you're creating a little casing for an elastic waistband to give the dress some shape. Don't sew all the way around this time - leave a 2-inch opening.</li>
<li>Using some of your child's existing clothing as a guide - leggings work well - measure off a length of elastic. Attach a safety pin to one end and thread it through the casing you created. Sew the elastic ends together, then sew the opening shut.</li>
</ul>
<br />
That's it. The dress is mostly done. Now you get to add some details.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPJyFVkFtN9sB75NjCmWNZSnx4qGNrTFtV8WNP_kFh2cCqoiC0PqMnvaXTQUmhvQZ8MuVwVeGVsbIM9mcJwfHXszx0c-bppfXzgnkE3IwJPkez91lxMZt6hMyl21fBN00NtzMI9sZmOkw1/s1600/_MG_1554.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="diy elsa dress" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPJyFVkFtN9sB75NjCmWNZSnx4qGNrTFtV8WNP_kFh2cCqoiC0PqMnvaXTQUmhvQZ8MuVwVeGVsbIM9mcJwfHXszx0c-bppfXzgnkE3IwJPkez91lxMZt6hMyl21fBN00NtzMI9sZmOkw1/s1600/_MG_1554.JPG" height="266" title="diy elsa dress" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3WcyJiJM6uTf0wXyjyGXoqFtytxyx5wyeu7_1pIWLFlAClo8cIi_gu3IxvVV-9xku1R5zhuw4AM5B3oiTQjWW1VgHwPm-o6548Mb15Gnltm06kKXkjuuA6010lxWpDLUYxwylbDNegIaX/s1600/_MG_1573.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="diy elsa dress" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3WcyJiJM6uTf0wXyjyGXoqFtytxyx5wyeu7_1pIWLFlAClo8cIi_gu3IxvVV-9xku1R5zhuw4AM5B3oiTQjWW1VgHwPm-o6548Mb15Gnltm06kKXkjuuA6010lxWpDLUYxwylbDNegIaX/s1600/_MG_1573.JPG" height="261" title="diy elsa dress" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The child's shirt I bought for this project already had a silver foil print on it, which worked nicely. If it had been plain, I might have added some sequins or rhinestones or something. The material we used for the cape was also sparkly to begin with. So, all we really added was some square-shaped sequined trim that kind of called back to Elsa's ice dress in the movie.<br />

John Bos is the son of immigrants who moved to California from The Netherlands in 1959.<br />
<br />
Decades later, John was standing outside the family's Modesto dairy, admiring some tulips his mother had grown.<br />
<br />
Then, John remembers, "My mom says, in her Dutch accent, 'Why don't you grow some and sell them for cut flowers?'"<br />
<br />
And he did.<br />
<br />

<br />
John started small, planting a couple hundred bulbs and sharing the flowers with family and friends.<br />
<br />
Now, he plants 100,000 bulbs a year - imported from Holland - at his Modesto-based operation, <a href="http://dutchhollowfarms.com/" target="_blank">Dutch Hollow Farms.</a><br />
<br />
I had the chance to visit Dutch Hollow a few times recently on assignments for <a href="http://www.recordnet.com/" target="_blank">The Record</a> newspaper and <a href="http://www.sanjoaquinlifestyles.com/" target="_blank">San Joaquin Lifestyles</a> magazine.<br />
<br />
What I didn't know about growing tulips is what an artisan's touch it demands: Throughout the short season, John has to carefully manage the sunlight - warm Valley winters can trick flowers into opening too soon, before their stems have had a chance to stretch.<br />
<br />
There are easier flowers to grow and easier ways to grow them, but John believes Dutch Hollow's big, vibrant blooms owe to his hand-crafted approach.<br />

John's flower stand is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. And this weekend (March 7, 8 and 9), to celebrate the peak of the tulip season, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/dutchhollowfarms" target="_blank">Dutch Hollow Farms</a> is hosting TulipMania, where visitors can pick their own tulips to plant at home or to trim into bouquets.<br />

<br />
Alice wants to grow her hair so long it touches the ground. She'd like to toss it out of a tower window and let people climb on up. She thinks that would be fun.<br />
<br />
I'm still hoping she outgrows (ha!) Mission Rapunzel before she realizes the mismatch between her vision and reality. But for now, anyway, she is committed to the fantasy.<br />
<br />
So, when I saw a long blond wig in the toy aisle the other day, I thought it would make a fun little treat for her.<br />
<br />
And of course it would be even more fun if she had a Rapunzel dress to go with it, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money and didn't have a lot of time to make one.<br />
<br />
Then I remembered the most important lesson I've learned about making princess dresses: They're not too difficult.<br />
<br />
At least, not necessarily. If all you're looking for is a fun addition to the dress-up wardrobe, the gown doesn't have to be a perfect facsimile. With the right color palette, all you really need is to suggest a few signature details - kids' imaginations will take them the rest of the way. <br />
<br />
For Alice's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapunzel_(Disney)" target="_blank">version of Rapunzel</a>, those details were the sleeves and lace-up bodice. With that in mind, I tried to think up the simplest foundation possible and decided to try making a dress out of two T-shirts. This gave us a dress that is softer than most store-bought costumes, and a lot easier to get into.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQEmCzgwqjzE2Vu3OSQkXXw4zC8z3GPfpaccEkQlShPDZjuff8nub892gT029Bs-eiAHn51jQE6Zfez2DP0DTiAwv-gP2FlEEgrz6j-9icdYwkhCdgMAhhL_j8PwBfXKpTdIJ1SWz83ics/s1600/princessdressez.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy princess dress" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQEmCzgwqjzE2Vu3OSQkXXw4zC8z3GPfpaccEkQlShPDZjuff8nub892gT029Bs-eiAHn51jQE6Zfez2DP0DTiAwv-gP2FlEEgrz6j-9icdYwkhCdgMAhhL_j8PwBfXKpTdIJ1SWz83ics/s1600/princessdressez.jpg" height="172" title="Easy princess dress" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It came out pretty well, I think! You can get this done in a couple of hours. Here's what you need:<br />
<ul>
<li>A T-shirt sized to fit your child</li>
<li>A T-shirt sized to fit an adult. (I used a medium)</li>
<li>Basic sewing supplies</li>
<li>Embellishments</li>
<li>Quarter-inch thick elastic</li>
</ul>
(The shirts I found were darker than I would have liked, but I got them both for $5 total, so I figured it was a good compromise).<br />
<ul>
<li>First, cut across the child-sized shirt, a couple of inches below the arm holes. This will be the bodice.</li>
<li>The adult shirt will be the skirt. Decide how long you want it to be, then cut across the top of the shirt accordingly. For Alice's dress, I cut the adult-sized shirt right at the base of the arm openings. </li>
</ul>
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cut each shirt, roughly where indicated above.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<ul>
<li>Depending on the size difference between your bodice and skirt pieces, you might need to gather the skirt a bit. If so, do that now. Then, sew the two pieces, right sides and raw edges together, with a 5/8 seam allowance. Using a zigzag stitch will make it easier to work with the knit fabric.</li>
<li>Instead of trimming the excess fabric, stitch another line into the seam allowance, about 3/8 of an inch away from the original seam. You're creating a little casing for elastic to give the dress some shape - make sure to leave a 2-inch opening.</li>
<li>Using some of your child's existing clothing as a guide - leggings work well - measure off a length of elastic. Attach a safety pin to one end and thread it through the casing you created. Sew the elastic ends together, then sew the opening shut.</li>
</ul>
That's your basic dress. <br />
<br />
Now you get to add some details. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifH2uUxilbbevVR1CAvkcGoc0SoGnHyCCVSDyfxPuGa-gtoOauoPVgi_rL_coaorw2gefdMAKAT82PNEV2hHxKErES1hYp8RAGdeEwaOt8bOwdTlIr1o15pP8BQyVkg6RKTDZ0PmYmRt6l/s1600/_MG_1384.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy princess dress" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifH2uUxilbbevVR1CAvkcGoc0SoGnHyCCVSDyfxPuGa-gtoOauoPVgi_rL_coaorw2gefdMAKAT82PNEV2hHxKErES1hYp8RAGdeEwaOt8bOwdTlIr1o15pP8BQyVkg6RKTDZ0PmYmRt6l/s1600/_MG_1384.JPG" height="266" title="easy princess dress" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The lace-up bodice and slashed sleeves were beyond the scope of what I wanted and had time to do with Alice's Rapunzel dress. Instead, I tried to suggest those details with some pretty trim and ribbon. Finally, I added a little embellishment to the hem and neckline.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8sidat5NLuYUuWVH8AXQk_xjXbzhSSeNrtjCpgGll1DC2OdrpCduzrk60w_CiYQ1uoUwMVIiPjdG5jEC2D3o9uGhGTfHyFgY1Eu-jKTRMhTG_wgMur7WrUjOaW1FpB8JOeSIgVrDFOQMH/s1600/_MG_1415.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy princess dress" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8sidat5NLuYUuWVH8AXQk_xjXbzhSSeNrtjCpgGll1DC2OdrpCduzrk60w_CiYQ1uoUwMVIiPjdG5jEC2D3o9uGhGTfHyFgY1Eu-jKTRMhTG_wgMur7WrUjOaW1FpB8JOeSIgVrDFOQMH/s1600/_MG_1415.JPG" height="251" title="easy princess dress" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
She was convinced.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSGn4d-hj1f9t1i9jaKCEwNhpdJzFZ1pjwj0tqZEjwg44fo50SUDusH8Z4vmU2b1lOPgJOnqEh5h7fmXJJc6_fenvgrdbC70h5rOJH2Obij0u1cQvSdQlvs3Ss4bdh_rn8zHL_KRQVqqOR/s1600/_MG_1369.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy princess dress" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSGn4d-hj1f9t1i9jaKCEwNhpdJzFZ1pjwj0tqZEjwg44fo50SUDusH8Z4vmU2b1lOPgJOnqEh5h7fmXJJc6_fenvgrdbC70h5rOJH2Obij0u1cQvSdQlvs3Ss4bdh_rn8zHL_KRQVqqOR/s1600/_MG_1369.JPG" height="266" title="easy princess dress" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I'd love to try this with other costumes. Cinderella and Snow White could be really fun, but those ladies are already represented in our dress-up drawer, so perhaps Tiana or Belle? Princess Anna might be too tricky for this method, but I bet you could pull off a credible Elsa. And why not non-princesses like Wonder Woman or Super Girl? <br />
<br />
<i><b>Update</b></i>: We tried an <a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2014/10/a-super-easy-diy-elsa-dress.html" target="_blank">Elsa version</a>.Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08172648663393764639noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3452267801588445800.post-71121678370015317632014-02-12T22:29:00.000-08:002014-02-12T22:30:57.181-08:00Name a Roach for Your ValentineI had some disappointing news today. Nothing at all serious or, in the long run, even important. Just a small frustration that left me feeling a little deflated.<br />
<br />
<i>Until</i> I discovered that you can <a href="http://www.mgzoo.com/zoo/micke-grove/support-the-zoo/name-a-roach.htm" target="_blank">name a cockroach for your valentine</a> at Micke Grove Zoo.<br />
<br />
Now I am <i>beside</i> myself.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSdOeyQVBjj4k20u8-1BgY_m4_IEOOAl1FIQnYWWoLHGxcv3juF0gGiWqrgnjQHlHARKrCaONDByQ5EjXmYyGgvs2xFcpHEXoYa0tfiK9b3CR-tEAOxTYw2QptN7fDPAO959p2JN166sm6/s1600/cockroach+hugs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="funny valentine" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSdOeyQVBjj4k20u8-1BgY_m4_IEOOAl1FIQnYWWoLHGxcv3juF0gGiWqrgnjQHlHARKrCaONDByQ5EjXmYyGgvs2xFcpHEXoYa0tfiK9b3CR-tEAOxTYw2QptN7fDPAO959p2JN166sm6/s1600/cockroach+hugs.jpg" height="305" title="funny valentine" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The <a href="http://www.mgzoo.com/zoo/micke-grove/default.htm" target="_blank">zoo</a> explains:<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Do you have a love that can't be squashed? ... Nothing says 'forever' like a cockroach. Not only are they strong and resilient, they've also been around for about 300 million years. What better way to tell someone that you hope your love will last forever than to name a Madagascar hissing cockroach in their honor?"</blockquote>
<br />
<i>Right?</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
I love it.<br />
<br />
Madagascar hissing cockroaches are among the <a href="http://www.mgzoo.com/zoo/micke-grove/animals-conservation/default.htm" target="_blank">more than 50 species</a> at Micke Grove. Naming a roach costs $10, a tax-deductible donation that supports zoo operations and educational programming. Your (thrilled!) recipient will receive a personalized digital certificate and recognition at the zoo. It's a limited-time offer, friends. <br />
<br />
Alice's class will have a Valentine's Day party at the end of this week.<br />
<br />
She can hardly wait.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, since both of us were feeling festive, we decided to throw together a fun little Valentine's Day snack - she's enjoyed munching on it after school.<br />
<br />
It's super easy and a great measuring activity for preschoolers or even toddlers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUDvDTh3tP1xVStynWz2zgnbceU9mUuXw1VZ3z4ofS4HdzTL6h3uikszXBEiTBnuIPDVGdvxLG8bH-FYu5IhVsfbiYXI0JeEPqLRPWebwCs71WprHIfwDxvKBW2TCRXm5_ts3KQUWTilC1/s1600/valentinetrailmix+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Valentine's Day Snack" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUDvDTh3tP1xVStynWz2zgnbceU9mUuXw1VZ3z4ofS4HdzTL6h3uikszXBEiTBnuIPDVGdvxLG8bH-FYu5IhVsfbiYXI0JeEPqLRPWebwCs71WprHIfwDxvKBW2TCRXm5_ts3KQUWTilC1/s1600/valentinetrailmix+copy.jpg" height="295" title="Valentine's Day Trail Mix" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Make as big or small a batch as you'd like using:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Two parts <a href="http://www.quakeroats.com/products/cold-cereals/whole-hearts/original.aspx" target="_blank">Quaker Whole Hearts</a> cereal. (I chose it for the shape, but if you can't find it, any kind of 'Os' cereal would work).</li>
</ul>
<br />
<i>and one part each</i><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Chocolate chips</li>
<li>Mini marshmallows</li>
<li>Dried cranberries</li>
<li>Something salty - we broke apart some pretzels, but I bet popcorn would be tasty too</li>
</ul>
<br />
For a little more color and zip, you could also toss in a handful of cinnamon heart candies<br />
<br />
(For our smallish batch, we used 1 cup of cereal and half a cup of everything else).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_0yMy76oikboA7K1he_o6CDHOjpIxmjiXvJw22WmlzMrEt3IMctPzWvgkHp3AujVfwKbGiw7ZGiI5ODV9AwJLxmmxnrzcKk4pFFV6CuZ4N0Dp-TPVwEfkJtFl7Cn-nmQvtzG4Q7KGC_Nv/s1600/2014-02-11.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img alt="Valentine's Day snack" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_0yMy76oikboA7K1he_o6CDHOjpIxmjiXvJw22WmlzMrEt3IMctPzWvgkHp3AujVfwKbGiw7ZGiI5ODV9AwJLxmmxnrzcKk4pFFV6CuZ4N0Dp-TPVwEfkJtFl7Cn-nmQvtzG4Q7KGC_Nv/s1600/2014-02-11.jpg" height="300" title="Valentine's day snack" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Pour everything into a bowl and mix.<br />
<br />
Alice and I served ours in paper cupcake liners, but I think this treat would be extra special inside some <a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2012/12/diy-super-simple-favor-bags.html" target="_blank">simple paper favor bags</a>.<br />

<br />
Alice was born just before the start of the 2010 Winter Olympic games in Vancouver.<br />
<br />
And late, late at night, when it seemed like everyone else in the whole world was sleeping, she and I watched re-broadcasts of ice dancing and ski jumping, snowboarding and speed skating. Foggy as my head was at the time, those are some my clearest (and tenderest) memories of her newborn days.<br />
<br />
It's hard to believe that was four years ago. It's hard to believe she's 4!<br />
<br />
We've been watching some of this year's competitions together - she's old enough now to take a more active interest. (The athletes in women's snowboarding look like they're flying, she says. I agree).<br />
<br />
Has your family been tuning in? Here are a few more ways you can enjoy the games with little ones:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
What a <a href="http://www.weather.com/weather/weekend/Stockton+CA+USCA1100:1:US" target="_blank">pretty weekend </a>it's shaping up to be! I'm really excited to get out and do something fun with the girls. Unfortunately, our 4-month-old is in the throes of a tragic sleep backslide, waking up grumbly and grouchy two, sometimes, three times a night. I don't remember this happening with our first, and, oh, man, it's a bummer. Are you familiar with the so-called "<a href="http://www.troublesometots.com/the-thing-about-sleep-regressions/" target="_blank">4-month sleep regression</a>?" Did it pass? Quickly? (Please say quickly).<br />
<br />
There's lots to do this weekend - if we can manage to get a little sleep. Here are some of the things we're thinking about (as we yawn and pace the hall):<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.bigfun.org/" target="_blank">California State Fair</a><br />
Alice loves farm animals to begin with, and she's even more interested now that we're right in the middle of <a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2013/07/five-great-books-to-read-aloud-with-kids.html" target="_blank">Charlotte's Web</a>. What lucky timing! This is the state fair's opening weekend - it runs through July 28 at <a href="http://www.calexpo.com/" target="_blank">Cal Expo</a> in Sacramento. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Tickets are $12 for general-admission guests, $10 for visitors 62 and older, $8 for kids 5-12, and free for children up to age 4. Parking is another $10. Find more information and a daily schedule of events at the Fair's <a href="http://www.bigfun.org/daily-schedule/friday-july-12/" target="_blank">website</a>. (P.S. News10 is hosting a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/News10" target="_blank">ticket contest</a>!)<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8gC9yQ6AnBdb7KjqxrHhc0Q6VSh3XL_qJsfn4eoO6di_i6fHj4H5DHQoRsdK5_6WxVMLMng-d3c2cWNhZL-kDwxFHLLH6OE-CfUK27RAECRQWz7cDraRBHahD2TUohRkbn8AZO9qqT84V/s1600/IMG_6790.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Read aloud" border="0" height="313" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8gC9yQ6AnBdb7KjqxrHhc0Q6VSh3XL_qJsfn4eoO6di_i6fHj4H5DHQoRsdK5_6WxVMLMng-d3c2cWNhZL-kDwxFHLLH6OE-CfUK27RAECRQWz7cDraRBHahD2TUohRkbn8AZO9qqT84V/s400/IMG_6790.JPG" title="Read aloud" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The other night, when I tiptoed into Alice's room to check on her, I found her still awake and whispering to her stuffed animals. <br />
<br />
"No, Templeton," she scolded. "That is not your slop." <br />
<br />
She was acting out <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte%27s_Web" target="_blank">Charlotte's Web</a>, and not in a million years would I have told her to go to bed just then.<br />
<br />
We started reading the E.B. White classic, a chapter or two a night, about a week ago. I thought Alice might be a little too young for it - not the subject matter (though I am not looking forward to the ending) so much as the number of words and the lack of pictures. There are some pictures, of course. Beautiful ones by Garth Williams, but not a picture for every scene as in most of the books she has been read. <br />
<br />
And beyond that, I wasn't sure she was ready to stick with a story that unfolds over days and weeks rather than just a few minutes. This was a book we would have to put down and pick back up night after night, remembering where we left off, and I just didn't know whether it would sustain her interest. But I wanted to give it a try.<br />
<br />
So far, she's loving it. It helps that, when her dad reads it, he does all the farm animal voices.<br />
<br />
When I bought our copy of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte%27s_Web" target="_blank">Charlotte's Web</a>, the cashier looked at it and said, "Oh, my mom used to read this to me."<br />
<br />
I told her I was buying it to read to my daughter, but that I thought it was going to be a a bit of a stretch for her.<br />
<br />
"That's OK," she said. "That's how we learn."<br />
<br />
Don't you love conversations like that?<br />
<br />
Anyway, reading aloud to children - especially before they start school - is heaven. And it has all sorts of <a href="http://www.trelease-on-reading.com/rah-ch1.html" target="_blank">developmental and educational benefits</a> besides.<br />
<br />
To help us discover even more books to share, I asked <a href="http://www.blogger.com/profile/14617340883740708662" target="_blank">Suzy Daveluy</a>, of the <a href="http://www.ssjcpl.org/" target="_blank">Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library System</a>, to reccommend some great family read-alouds. (The legendary Suzy Daveluy is youth services coordinator for the library, and also oversees literacy, outreach and programming). Here are her picks, in no particular order. All, coincidentally, are available throughout the local library system:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnie-the-Pooh_(book)" target="_blank">Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne</a><br />
The classic adventures of Pooh Bear, Piglet, Christopher Robin and friends.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Popper%27s_Penguins" target="_blank">Mr Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater</a><br />
Small-town painter Mr. Popper unexpectedly comes to possess a penguin. And then two. And then a dozen. A Newbery Honor book. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Miraculous_Journey_of_Edward_Tulane" target="_blank">The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane</a><br />
Edward Tulane is a china rabbit, given to a 10-year-old girl by her grandmother. After selfish Edward is accidentally lost, he is passed along, from owner to owner, maturing along the way.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cricket_In_Times_Square" target="_blank">The Cricket in Times Square by George Seldon</a><br />
Chester, a cricket from Connecticut gets caught on a commuter train and ends up in Times Square. Eventually, he reveals an unusual musical talent. A Newbery Honor book.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_One_and_Only_Ivan" target="_blank">The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate</a><br />
The diary of Ivan, a gorilla who has lived in a cage at the mall for 27 years. Winner of the 2013 Newbery Medal.<br />

<br />
Happy Independence Day!<br />
<br />
I love looking at fireworks. Growing up, on Fourth of July, we used to light them in the street outside my grandmother's house. My dad always seemed so on edge, though, and I would think, "Dad. What's the big <i>deal</i>?"<br />
<br />
Oh. I get it now.<br />
<br />
Safe-and-sane fireworks <a href="http://www.visitstockton.org/special-promotions/Stockton-Fireworks-Stands" target="_blank">can be purchased</a> throughout Stockton (and fireworks sales raise lots of money for local organizations.) But with really little ones around it can feel better - and just as festive - to watch from a distance. Here's where to find fireworks displays in Stockton this evening:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/StocktonMiracleMile" target="_blank">Miracle Mile Fourth of July Parade</a><br />
OK. Sorry, no fireworks here. But I had to include the parade because I love parades almost as much as I love fireworks. And this is a fun one. Weave some red, white and blue streamers through your bicycle spokes and ride over to Pacific Avenue, between Harding Way and Tuxedo Court. The parade starts at 10 a.m.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.milb.com/tickets/singlegame.jsp?sid=t524" target="_blank">Stockton Ports Fireworks</a><br />
The Stockton Ports play the Modesto Nuts at Banner Island Ballpark. The game starts at 7:05 p.m., with fireworks to follow. Before we had kids, my husband and I lived in an apartment above the Miracle Mile, and if we really craned our necks, we could just see this show out of our kitchen window. It's one of my favorite local memories.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.universityplazawaterfronthotel.com/featured-promotion.htm" target="_blank">Fourth of July Barbecue at University Plaza Waterfront Hote</a>l<br />
The pool will be open during the hotel's annual Independence Day barbecue - bring your own towel. Doors open at 5 p.m., with music and food starting at 6. You'll be able to see the Stockton Ports fireworks from the party. Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for kids, and reservations are required.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://french-25.com/upcoming-events/" target="_blank">Rooftop Fireworks at French 25</a><br />
One more place to check out the Stockton Ports fireworks show. The restaurant is offering a barbecue buffet on its Downtown rooftop from 6 to 10 p.m. Reservations required.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.villagewestmarina.com/PDF/newsletter.pdf" target="_blank">Village West Marina Fireworks</a><br />
Village West Marina, in collaboration with Garlic Brothers Restaurant and Village West will host a fireworks show starting after dark. Enjoy food and music - but get there early: seating is first come, first served.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9sLyZC78vfuM92qWQA85EUHlKTKsbx9Svce5YVsM7EN6niR2itzDfivVICrEd2qFc1gEMxKPFydYMwqPnMtMPAGQeUyFFZb32OvuET5ki_DXNGqgWMWDWnhhfJPcc6yV98OnQdJaICE_0/s1600/_MG_0689.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="strawberry shortcake" border="0" height="295" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9sLyZC78vfuM92qWQA85EUHlKTKsbx9Svce5YVsM7EN6niR2itzDfivVICrEd2qFc1gEMxKPFydYMwqPnMtMPAGQeUyFFZb32OvuET5ki_DXNGqgWMWDWnhhfJPcc6yV98OnQdJaICE_0/s400/_MG_0689.JPG" title="strawberry shortcake" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
When it comes to strawberry shortcake, I strongly prefer a biscuit-y foundation to angel's food. What do you think?<br />
<br />
This recipe is super-simple (It comes from the back of the Bisquick box), and would make the perfect dessert for your Fourth of July barbecue. And while no one could blame you for wanting to keep the oven turned off for the next few days, I promise this is worth it.<br />
<br />
<em>For the topping, you need:</em><br />
<ul>
<li>4 cups of strawberries, quartered</li>
<li>1/2 cup of sugar</li>
<li>Whipped cream</li>
</ul>
<br />
For the cake, you need:<br />
<ul>
<li>2 1/3 cups Bisquick or similar baking mix</li>
<li>2/3 cup milk</li>
<li>3 tablespoons sugar</li>
<li>3 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted</li>
</ul>
<br />
First, mix the fruit with half a cup of sugar and refrigerate until serving.<br />
<br />
For the shortcake, mix all ingredients, then spoon six mounds of dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet.<br />
<br />
Bake at 425 degrees for 10-12 minutes<br />
<br />
Split the cakes, then top with fruit and whipped cream.<br />
<br />
Easy, right? And so good.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOHuVP0vpmtS7ZoNWEHZ_rCPw58g2wne0ZHuOuhx4xQOnxed0y2CfwWYWbxP_YtuPlZOkgkiZmvyoJX-2AzI_WlE4qNHGs_NIQf4v0btlbrQ7kNk2BttRoEU4gOND7TL4k8L2XWC5w1os6/s1600/_MG_0818.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="291" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOHuVP0vpmtS7ZoNWEHZ_rCPw58g2wne0ZHuOuhx4xQOnxed0y2CfwWYWbxP_YtuPlZOkgkiZmvyoJX-2AzI_WlE4qNHGs_NIQf4v0btlbrQ7kNk2BttRoEU4gOND7TL4k8L2XWC5w1os6/s400/_MG_0818.JPG" title="fabric flowers" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Last week's <a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2013/06/how-to-make-bandana-bib.html" target="_blank">bandana bib</a> project left me with enough scraps for some pretty little fabric flowers. They make a fun - and quick - Fourth of July accessory, and no sewing is required.<br />
<br />
<em>To make some you need:</em><br />
<ul>
<li>Fabric (I used cotton bandanas, but you could use anything you like or have around, as long as it's fairly lightweight. For each flower, you'll need four circles, each about 3 inches in diameter.)</li>
<li>Spray starch</li>
<li>Twine or string</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw7ho1SBXAXl6UoBacTZrCYPYrydObiXdfHkwqDK5Sy3SpH5b4-cJkLbMkgROWqf4F4yDdqfb874VhG3ADK-MfqQ4zCsZQyffh-TV4j37-_7AClUZQr2_RXNOuZsYKk2-R-dZTW7cnp7d8/s1600/2013-06-251.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw7ho1SBXAXl6UoBacTZrCYPYrydObiXdfHkwqDK5Sy3SpH5b4-cJkLbMkgROWqf4F4yDdqfb874VhG3ADK-MfqQ4zCsZQyffh-TV4j37-_7AClUZQr2_RXNOuZsYKk2-R-dZTW7cnp7d8/s400/2013-06-251.jpg" title="fabric flowers" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
First, trace four circles on your fabric and cut them out. The bigger the circles, the bigger the flower, obviously. I used a mason jar lid as a guide.<br />
<br />
Spray the circles with starch and press each one.<br />
<br />
Make a stack of four circles, alternating colors, if you like. Then, spray with starch again and fold the stack, accordian-style. You should be able to get three folds - <em>over, under, over</em>. Press.<br />
<br />
Pinch the center of the folded stack so that it looks like a bow, then tie it off tightly with twine - sewing thread isn't going to be strong enough.<br />
<br />
When the starch has dried, carefully separate and pull up each fabric layer so they look like petals.<br />
<br />
And that's it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXYhhBnRZvHu8VN2ILmDIva7ffIa01epk-1Fz0tgPkgeUSh51iHVAkmrrG3lo95MqjBn8TuVoKs3kbFAA8iraNQrgWJ3NA1LczxBfpV6tyUSRz9FhP12hSms5XmxqaBf8-1f-SCYvQpKvx/s1600/2013-07-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="fabric flowers" border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXYhhBnRZvHu8VN2ILmDIva7ffIa01epk-1Fz0tgPkgeUSh51iHVAkmrrG3lo95MqjBn8TuVoKs3kbFAA8iraNQrgWJ3NA1LczxBfpV6tyUSRz9FhP12hSms5XmxqaBf8-1f-SCYvQpKvx/s400/2013-07-01.jpg" title="fabric flowers" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Fasten the rosettes to safety pins or hairpins. Or, string up a chain to make a garland. A little more starch or some hairspray should keep the edges from fraying too badly. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Over the weekend, my husband went to Target to buy the girls a wading pool and said the store was pretty much cleaned out.<br />
<br />
Great minds, right?<br />
<br />
He did manage to find a small inflatable model, though, and I have to tell you, I think it was one of the best purchases we have made in a while.<br />
<br />
This heat is supposed to last a <a href="http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/stockton-ca/95202/weather-forecast/327149" target="_blank">few days longer</a>, so in case there isn't a pool in your backyard, I thought I'd compile some of the other places you and your kids can go to get wet. (Or, if you prefer to stay indoors, check out this <a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2012/08/staying-cool-with-kids.html" target="_blank">list of air-conditioned activities</a> in and around Stockton).<br />
<br />
And again, <a href="http://www.sjcphs.org/Disease/Heat_Emergencies.aspx" target="_blank">stay healthy</a> out there. <br />
<br />

There isn't a ton of shade, but this north Stockton park does have a cool water feature. That's my preschooler playing at Faklis Park in the photo above.<br />

<a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2013/06/five-reasons-to-visit-pixie-woods-this.html" target="_blank">Pixie Woods</a><br />

<br />
Around here, we're working on reaching and grabbing and rolling over.<br />
<br />
Are you exhausted just thinking about it?<br />
<br />
Gosh, there's so much going on this weekend - all of it a fun. But whatever you decide, stay cool and hydrated, friends. It's going to be <a href="http://www.weather.com/weather/weekend/Stockton+CA+USCA1100:1:US" target="_blank">awfully hot.</a> (By the way, the Public Health Department has posted this <a href="http://www.sjcphs.org/Disease/Heat_Emergencies.aspx" target="_blank">resource page</a> on extreme heat. Take a look).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.deltacollege.edu/dept/publicinfo/prel/2013/SummerStreetFair.html" target="_blank">Summer Street Fair</a><br />
From 3 to 8 p.m. Fridays until Aug. 9, San Joaquin Delta College hosts its Summer Street Fair, featuring live music, classic cars, food and children's activities. Proceeds benefit the <a href="http://www.deltacollege.edu/dept/passport/index.html" target="_blank">Passport to College</a> program. In the L3 parking lot.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/311191242346353/" target="_blank">Stockton-Con Movie Night</a><br />
Stockton's comic-book convention hosts a special <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/311191242346353/" target="_blank">screening of "Raiders of the Lost Ark</a> at 7 p.m. Friday at <a href="http://www.stocktonempiretheatre.com/" target="_blank">Empire Theatre</a> on Pacific Ave. (P.S. the movie features a shot of <a href="http://www.pacific.edu/" target="_blank">University of the Pacific</a>! Look out for it). Tickets are $7 at the door. After the show, take your stub to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Yogurt-My-Way/173449639650" target="_blank">Yogurt My Way</a> for a special discount.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lodibuddhist.org/docs/2013%20BCL%20Obon%20Bazaar.pdf" target="_blank">Lodi Obon Bazaar</a><br />
The annual celebration at <a href="http://lodibuddhist.org/" target="_blank">Buddhist Church of Lodi</a> features Japanese food, and cultural displays and demonstrations. (There's also a health fair, church tour and activities for kids). Festivities run from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, and from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Obon is traditionally a time for families to reunite and honor the spirits of their ancestors.<br />

This one is tough to explain. You'll just have to trust me that it's super neat. The story of the region's natural and cultural heritage is told through music, pageantry - and giant puppets. Starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, performers parade around <a href="https://maps.google.com/maps?q=victory+park+in+stockton,+ca&ll=37.961134,-121.314855&spn=0.007968,0.01354&oe=UTF-8&fb=1&gl=us&hq=victory+park&hnear=0x80900d737b442181:0x5876f5d1044fcbd8,Stockton,+CA&cid=0,0,14481165435196693169&t=m&z=16&vpsrc=0&iwloc=A" target="_blank">Victory Park</a> before gathering next to the Haggin Museum for the pageant. The festival lasts until 1 p.m. and also features performances from various ethnic arts ensembles.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMrtVAoKtVrsYAwaMCuFRzyTbWYEGZmCNE-rRPp43Mjx1h3O03j65p1ZYQJJUJWETPX-AmhrWcXg6nx9tdrtFoHwkLpIpFcKur-Zjb0qOo8JCf1Siyi2Ako-1Qm8UZ85PrJ7gEv7h3OszY/s1600/bib.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="bandana bib" border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMrtVAoKtVrsYAwaMCuFRzyTbWYEGZmCNE-rRPp43Mjx1h3O03j65p1ZYQJJUJWETPX-AmhrWcXg6nx9tdrtFoHwkLpIpFcKur-Zjb0qOo8JCf1Siyi2Ako-1Qm8UZ85PrJ7gEv7h3OszY/s400/bib.jpg" title="bandana bib" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It seems early for her to be teething, but my baby girl has been dribbling like an adorable little faucet lately.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Rather than change damp onesies all day, I've started to put bibs on her. She's not eating solids yet, so we don't need anything heavy-duty - just enough to keep her shirt dry. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And with Fourth of July around the corner, I thought I could make her something a little fun and festive too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This bandana bib was super easy and pretty economical. Here's how to make one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i>You'll need:</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>A bandana</li>
<li>Absorbant backing material (I used flannel)</li>
<li>Sew-in Velcro or snaps</li>
<li>Sewing supplies</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB3dGQ3Fypv846BWkHj8n6cWS38puJlNf8E8w7cJg5ulivACNtAhvXyrDrDMOnALjvaGus-1eceLjiHpzIPWI75B0Q2zVrDW80cg0Bo6CSXQPC0We0LTG9FMD7RSth-9VQkGllD2PDXuEp/s1600/2013-06-25.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="bandana bib" border="0" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB3dGQ3Fypv846BWkHj8n6cWS38puJlNf8E8w7cJg5ulivACNtAhvXyrDrDMOnALjvaGus-1eceLjiHpzIPWI75B0Q2zVrDW80cg0Bo6CSXQPC0We0LTG9FMD7RSth-9VQkGllD2PDXuEp/s400/2013-06-25.jpg" title="bandana bib" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>First iron your bandana flat, then fold one corner up to the center. Cut along the fold to create a triangle. (My baby is almost 4-months-old, and this <i>just</i> fit her. If you have an older or chubbier baby, you might need a larger triangle. Try measuring around the neckline of a t-shirt to figure out how wide your base should be.)</li>
<li>Cut a matching shape out of the backing material.</li>
<li>Pin the front and back sides of the bib together, right sides facing.</li>
<li>Sew around all three sides, leaving a 2-inch gap.</li>
<li>Trim, turn the bib right-side out and iron flat.</li>
<li>Top stitch along all three sides, this time sewing the gap closed.</li>
<li>Attach your Velcro or snaps. To avoid frustration later, make sure one tab is sewn onto the bandana side and the other is sewn onto the backing side.</li>
</ol>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have you ever seen a sweeter bandit?</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Moms and kids create their own books together at a literacy workshop.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
A project I am particularly proud to be part of is the <a href="http://www.pacific.edu/About-Pacific/Newsroom/2012/September-2012/BOG-Community-Council-Launches-Reading-by-Third-campaign.html" target="_blank">Beyond Our Gates Reading by Third initiative</a>, coordinated by <a href="http://www.pacific.edu/" target="_blank">University of the Pacific</a>, with support from dozens of local individuals and organizations.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://gradelevelreading.net/" target="_blank">Research shows</a> that the ability to read proficiently by the end of third grade is an important predictor of a child's educational success - kids who aren't strong readers by the time they leave third grade tend to fall behind, and many of them don't catch up. Unfortunately, fewer than half of third graders in our community are reading at grade level.<br />
<br />
But we can turn things around.<br />
<br />
One of the easiest - and, it must be said, most fun - ways to nurture strong readers is to read aloud to young children every day. Reading aloud help kids build vocabulary, make the connection between letters and words, and, perhaps most importantly, develop a strong bond with the adults in their lives.<br />
<br />
For a lot of us, reading aloud feels easy and natural. But, many times, it can seem a little awkward, especially when your child is too young to sit still through a whole story, or even to really understand the words.<br />
<br />
To help show parents how and why to read aloud to young children, we <a href="http://www.pacific.edu/About-Pacific/Newsroom/2013/May---August-2013/Helping-Families-Raise-Readers.html" target="_blank">launched a series of summer literacy workshops.</a> The project <a href="http://www.recordnet.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20130622/A_NEWS/306220324&cid=sitesearch" target="_blank">kicked off</a> last week, and in celebration, I thought I'd share five simple tips for reading aloud with little ones (Tips compiled by <a href="http://www.sjckids.org/" target="_blank">First 5 San Joaquin</a>):<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>Point to each word as you read so your child makes the connection between words and letters.</li>
<li>Read your child's favorite books over and over again.</li>
<li>Choose stories with rhyming words and lines that repeat.</li>
<li>Discuss new words. For example, "This big house is called a 'palace.' Who do you think lives in a palace?"</li>
<li>Stop and ask about the pictures and what is happening in the story.</li>
</ol>
<br />

<br />
Only a few blackberries are left on our vine anymore. Purple and overripe, they make the porch smell like jam.<br />
<br />
We planted them with crossed fingers, not really knowing what to expect. But it turns out blackberries are terribly easy to grow at home. (They grow wild around here too - we recently found a patch over at <a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2013/06/five-reasons-to-visit-pixie-woods-this.html" target="_blank">Pixie Woods</a>).<br />
<br />
Watching Alice pluck berries right off the vine and pop them in her mouth has become one of the great pleasures of early summer for me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbaqj7A63Pzj4SQ6Ledfp2wItRBl7jAydjIGzKA1zW7pKpLVDzdsIBZuCLJ2PPHd4F8Cmu4GWSWuupWiR0gv-KbK277jMrqzOkoNZ3AcNOVioIDFQb2lHYBrE4w3cwkrPYL1LTjiEhDG2z/s1600/blackberries_vine.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="blackberry vine" border="0" height="281" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbaqj7A63Pzj4SQ6Ledfp2wItRBl7jAydjIGzKA1zW7pKpLVDzdsIBZuCLJ2PPHd4F8Cmu4GWSWuupWiR0gv-KbK277jMrqzOkoNZ3AcNOVioIDFQb2lHYBrE4w3cwkrPYL1LTjiEhDG2z/s400/blackberries_vine.JPG" title="blackberry vine" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here are a few things to keep in mind when growing blackberries at home:<br />
<ul>
<li>You probably want to <a href="http://ucanr.org/sites/gardenweb/Berries/?uid=1&ds=466" target="_blank">trellis</a> them. Not all blackberries need the extra support, but it's helpful, especially when it's time to harvest. Ours grow along the front porch railing, which is convenient and pretty.</li>
<li>Blackberry canes grow one season and then produce fruit the next season. For us, this means we get a year of really abundant berries, followed by a year that's sort of disappointing.</li>
<li>They love full sun and well-drained soil and, after the first year, need a lot of pruning.</li>
<li>Blackberries are usually <a href="http://ucanr.org/sites/gardenweb/Berries/?uid=6&ds=466" target="_blank">planted</a> in December or January, the dormant season. But you could plant a potted vine even now. Space them at least 3 to 4 feet apart. (In my experience, they really take off - you might not need too many).</li>
<li>Pick when the berries are dark, dark purple and yield easily. If the berry has even a little red still on it, it's unripe and likely bitter.</li>
<li>Be careful. Blackberries have pretty white blossoms that look delicate and sweet. But they can also have monster thorns - make sure little hands don't reach under or inside the vines to harvest.</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOR7ieuIjsWm_WCRBZIWqtk_QumnWSvzo69JXJJwmNo057L68p9B5DANbOUXRRHSzkHtJVNKi5sl4lC_peGFGDjG8t8K4t2LAkQkL7hPzobkr97PAb2HXUAd5lv9jihN60MU1nDmDWwztd/s1600/blackberries_pie.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="blackberry pie" border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOR7ieuIjsWm_WCRBZIWqtk_QumnWSvzo69JXJJwmNo057L68p9B5DANbOUXRRHSzkHtJVNKi5sl4lC_peGFGDjG8t8K4t2LAkQkL7hPzobkr97PAb2HXUAd5lv9jihN60MU1nDmDWwztd/s400/blackberries_pie.JPG" title="blackberry pie" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
I don't know about you, but blackberry pie seems like the perfect summery dessert. I recently shared my recipe with The Record newspaper. Find it <a href="http://www.recordnet.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20130619/A_LIFE/306190301/-1/A_LIFE02" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

<br />
Happy first day of summer! Find a bowl of cherries. Pour a glass of lemonade.<br />
<br />
(Or, freeze a batch of <a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2012/06/food-in-front-yard-project-blueberries.html" target="_blank">blueberry paletas</a> and braid a summery <a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2012/06/make-summer-friendship-bracelet.html" target="_blank">friendship bracelet)</a>. Anything that's sweet - and just a little bit lazy - seems about right.<br />
<br />
It should be <a href="http://www.wunderground.com/weather-forecast/US/CA/Stockton.html" target="_blank">bright and warm on Saturday</a>, cloudier on Sunday, and rainy, maybe, into next week. Can you believe it?<br />
<br />
We'll be taking advantage of the sunshine while we can with a birthday party for one of Alice's nursery school friends, then, perhaps we'll check out some of the other events happening this weekend:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.sanjoaquinaudubon.org/#Butterfly" target="_blank">Summer Butterfly Count</a><br />
Oh, this looks awfully neat. A collaborative project of the <a href="http://www.sanjoaquinaudubon.org/" target="_blank">San Joaquin Audubon Society</a>, the <a href="http://cesanjoaquin.ucanr.edu/" target="_blank">University of California Cooperative Extension</a> and the <a href="http://www.naba.org/chapters.html" target="_blank">North American Butterfly Association</a>, the annual count is family-friendly and educational. No experience is necessary. The count will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Nature Center at <a href="http://www.mgzoo.com/parks/oak-grove-park.htm" target="_blank">Oak Grove Regional Park</a>. It should wrap up by 3 or 4 p.m. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and lunch (plus binoculars and nets, if you have them).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.engagedpatrons.org/EventsExtended.cfm?SiteID=3406&EventID=170360" target="_blank">Paws for Reading</a><br />
Children are invited to read - or be read to - alongside a friendly dog. 11 a.m. Saturday at the <a href="http://www.ssjcpl.org/locations/stockton/troke.html" target="_blank">Troke Branch Library</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/tour/2013/" target="_blank">The Lincoln Highway Association 100th Anniversary Tour</a><br />
Another very cool one. The Lincoln Highway was the country's first paved transcontinental road, stretching from <a href="http://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/map/" target="_blank">New York to San Francisco</a>. In celebration of the road's centennial, drivers are setting out from each of its endpoints, eventually meeting up in Kearney Nebraska. On Sunday, the drivers traveling from San Francisco make a <a href="http://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/tour/2013/route-west/" target="_blank">lunch stop</a> at the <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/banta-inn-tracy" target="_blank">Banta Inn</a>. Then, sometime between 1 and 3 p.m., this parade of antique vehicles will drive through the <a href="http://stocktonmiraclemile.com/" target="_blank">Miracle Mile</a> on their way to Sacramento. Come and see.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCdGY27zLEgzVzIxWDQtgm0-HK9ul3e-rMavh_FYOR6tv47yMdbnu7z91Mxge3864aBBjAFK0cfpJomwu9mUv3oKacGQDZKWMeKbApwx3TswW9zznh8s6iYVhqZEYFCNAa-F3p3RK8DuTh/s1600/growingartichoke.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="growing artichokes" border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCdGY27zLEgzVzIxWDQtgm0-HK9ul3e-rMavh_FYOR6tv47yMdbnu7z91Mxge3864aBBjAFK0cfpJomwu9mUv3oKacGQDZKWMeKbApwx3TswW9zznh8s6iYVhqZEYFCNAa-F3p3RK8DuTh/s400/growingartichoke.JPG" title="growing artichokes" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When we <a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2012/04/food-in-front-yard-project-part-1.html" target="_blank">decided to plant a fruit and vegetable garden in the front yard</a>, it was really important to me that the project look intentional and pretty - not like we were trying to farm the front lawn.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Artichokes seemed like a good pick for us. Their big, silvery leaves and architectural profile - they look a little prehistoric, to be honest - would add beauty and interest to our garden.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We also hoped they would produce artichokes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So it was disappointing, that first season, when they didn't. I think I know what went wrong: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://vric.ucdavis.edu/pdf/artichoke_GrowingArtichokes.pdf" target="_blank">Artichokes like cool, foggy summers and frost-free winters</a> - that's why you see so many growing in the Central Coast. In favorable conditions, each stalk will produce one big bud (the part you harvest) and a couple of smaller ones. But when conditions are too hot and dry, the plant won't produce.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ours needed more water.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We did better this year, growing about 10-12 artichokes between our two plants. We ate them simply - steamed and, once, with honey-mustard sauce.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'd call it a success.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are a few more things to know if you want to try growing artichokes too:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Artichoke plants are big - about 3 to 4 feet high and 6 feet in diameter. Give them lots of space.</li>
<li>It's a perennial; plants will produce edible buds for about five years.</li>
<li>In warm climates like ours, plant in partial shade and water once a week - or even more frequently - during the growing season.</li>
<li>Cut artichokes from the stem, an inch or so below the bulb.</li>
<li><a href="http://bonnieplants.com/growing/growing-artichoke/" target="_blank">Harvest</a> when the buds are about 3 inches in diameter, but still closed tight.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Even if you wait too long, an artichoke flower is lovely consolation.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqAG_wILG5FCXDYSKY4oRmKz338BvxtjP9j5EvcwRH4bXn3kkBFrBnEh7dF47tcau5BFTOxXE9nh0ysyFY1H4D-yde4uBTdT2pmLizMrwGA3zAJEbflScG4XS2jkBc7NUzZK0CeRy7DhMm/s1600/artichokeflower.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="growing artichokes" border="0" height="255" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqAG_wILG5FCXDYSKY4oRmKz338BvxtjP9j5EvcwRH4bXn3kkBFrBnEh7dF47tcau5BFTOxXE9nh0ysyFY1H4D-yde4uBTdT2pmLizMrwGA3zAJEbflScG4XS2jkBc7NUzZK0CeRy7DhMm/s400/artichokeflower.JPG" title="growing artichokes" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Fun fact: The entire edible portion of an artichoke bulb is about <a href="http://vric.ucdavis.edu/pdf/artichoke_GrowingArtichokes.pdf" target="_blank">50 calories</a>. Ha. After all the work it takes to prepare and eat one, you'd think they'd be more substantial.<br />

<br />
The girls' grandparents were visiting from out of town a couple of weekends ago, and we decided to take the whole gang to <a href="http://www.stocktongov.com/government/departments/communityServices/attPixWood.html" target="_blank">Pixie Woods</a>.<br />
<br />
Set behind a rainbow gate in a corner of Louis Park, <a href="http://www.stocktongov.com/government/departments/communityServices/attPixWood.html" target="_blank">Pixie Woods</a> is charming in that way our city can be so good at: Not fussy or fancy, but full of heart.<br />

<br />
Here are five reasons you and your kids should visit Pixie Woods before it closes for the season:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<b>1. It inspires imaginative play</b><br />
For the most part, Pixie Woods is made up of themed play areas. In the firefighters "boot camp," Alice climbed onto a big red engine and sped off on a rescue. During our visit, she was also a princess, a pirate and one of the three little pigs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8qpIjz9K9SOBId7x310PGbJRENzLwuV7PVtqDq6Cr-D0ku1mZJ9x4UBPzEkeWlJe6HPnh6JEnBDMh6D-oVQ90YE3BbAOQPx2pApaRgUbRClvLvtiiJM7SEFlIQV9i-H_ElZxWSrKDQs3i/s1600/IMG_7219.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="pixie woods" border="0" height="311" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8qpIjz9K9SOBId7x310PGbJRENzLwuV7PVtqDq6Cr-D0ku1mZJ9x4UBPzEkeWlJe6HPnh6JEnBDMh6D-oVQ90YE3BbAOQPx2pApaRgUbRClvLvtiiJM7SEFlIQV9i-H_ElZxWSrKDQs3i/s400/IMG_7219.JPG" title="pixie woods" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>2. It's cheap</b><br />
Admission is $4 for kids 2 and older. Ride tickets are $2 each, and family ticket packages are available. Parking is free.<br />
<br />
<b>3. It's cooler there</b><br />
Under a canopy of big, shady trees, the park also features several pools and streams. It's just a pleasant place to be during the summer. And bring a towel: At 1 p.m., the dragon fountain switches on and your kiddos can splash in the water.<br />
<br />
<b>4. It's something special.</b><br />
Besides the playgrounds, there are also a kiddie train, paddle boat, vintage carousel - and rabbit burrow. (With live bunnies).<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNVyYtMLryyKY9ZpNt2JMxHxxz-t1o-FgW3a6_fgeI5vEkjT6ODvF7ZBtdOtNnEcYxGM8zJ-GKkR2E4haJcSqOvm_QKGdNDVoE8SPujQ25Xw76vp8keNsrT6BbJ0vasjjFPR2qfvIKmAG2/s1600/IMG_7232.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="pixie woods carousel" border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNVyYtMLryyKY9ZpNt2JMxHxxz-t1o-FgW3a6_fgeI5vEkjT6ODvF7ZBtdOtNnEcYxGM8zJ-GKkR2E4haJcSqOvm_QKGdNDVoE8SPujQ25Xw76vp8keNsrT6BbJ0vasjjFPR2qfvIKmAG2/s400/IMG_7232.JPG" title="pixie woods carousel" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>5. It's a community effort.</b><br />
Since Pixie Woods opened more than half a century ago, it has depended on the work and commitment of volunteers. <a href="http://www.recordnet.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090320/A_INTERACT/90323007" target="_blank">Members of service clubs</a> gather regularly to spruce up the grounds, and <a href="http://www.recordnet.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120529/A_LIFE1201/205270306&cid=sitesearch" target="_blank">last year</a>, a 16-year-old made it his Eagle Scout project. That's a cool thing to support.<br />
<br />
Convinced?<br />
<br />
Here are the details.<br />

<i>* The park is open on both Independence Day and Labor Day.</i><br />
<b>Tickets:</b> $4 each for guests 2 and older. Rides are $2 each, with packages available.<br />
<br />
And here's a bonus point:<br />
<br />
It's not just for kids.<br />
<br />
My husband and I don't get to a lot of fundraisers. Crab feed season passes us right by. But one fundraising event we've really enjoyed has been the annual <a href="http://www.stocktongov.com/files/PixieWoodsWineTasting.pdf" target="_blank">wine tasting event </a>at Pixie Woods. Contribute to the park while enjoying yummy wines and hors d'oeuvres. This year's event is Friday (June 21) from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $40. <a href="http://www.stocktongov.com/files/PixieWoodsWineTasting.pdf" target="_blank">More information</a>.<br />
<br />

When we were in college, my husband used to call me "Torres." (We were buddies before we were anything else) And I used to hate it. I would think, "Dude. I'm not on your <i>team</i>." <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But now I feel like high-5ing him every night after we've finally managed to get the girls down. It's funny. I'm totally on his team. And glad for it, too.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Do you have plans for Father's Day? (If you need a gift, there's still time to make a batch of <a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2012/12/homemade-caramels.html" target="_blank">homemade caramels</a>, or a fun <a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2012/06/pop-up-photo-card.html" target="_blank">pop-up photo card</a>). I'm thinking something low-key - but a lot of fun - is in order. Like hot-fudge sundaes on the patio. While I mull it, here's some more of what's going on this weekend:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.sanjoaquinfair.com/index.html" target="_blank">San Joaquin County Fair</a></div>
<div>
Every year I swear I'm going to enter something into the county fair - like jam, or a quilt or something - and every year I blow it. Sigh. Next time. This year's fair continues through Sunday with a busy schedule of events and activities. <a href="http://www.sanjoaquinfair.com/grandStand.html" target="_blank">Grandstand entertainment </a>includes barrel racing and tractor pulling on Saturday, and bull riding on Sunday. But, I have to say, my favorite thing to do at the fair is to check out the livestock and other exhibitions. I also think the <a href="http://www.sanjoaquinfair.com/lib/PDF/SJCF_Read&Ride_Form_2013.pdf" target="_blank">Read & Ride</a> promotion is terribly cool - kids in grades K-8 can earn two free ride tickets by reading and reporting on two books. Find the details <a href="http://www.sanjoaquinfair.com/lib/PDF/SJCF_Read&Ride_Form_2013.pdf" target="_blank">here</a>. <a href="http://www.sanjoaquinfair.com/hours.html" target="_blank">The fair opens</a> at noon, with exhibits closing at 10 p.m., and the carnival and midway closing at midnight. <a href="http://www.sanjoaquinfair.com/buytickets.html" target="_blank">Admission</a> is $3 for visitors 13 and older. Kids 12 and younger are free. Parking is $5. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.fleetfeetstockton.com/" target="_blank">Father/Son Fun Run</a></div>
<div>
<a href="http://lincolncentershops.com/" target="_blank">Lincoln Center</a> hosts this 5K run/walk benefitting United Way of San Joaquin County (P.S. daughters are invited too!) from 9 a.m to noon on Saturday. Registration is $10. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="http://sjbikefest-es2.eventbrite.com/#" target="_blank">San Joaquin Bike Fest</a></div>
<div>
A fundraiser supporting Stockton's <a href="http://www.stocktonfoodbank.org/" target="_blank">Emergency Food Bank</a>, the event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at <a href="http://www.pacific.edu/Campus-Life/Housing-and-Facilities/Campus-Facilities/DeRosa-University-Center.html" target="_blank">University of the Pacific's DeRosa University Center</a>. Join in on one of several scenic rides, ranging from one- to 25-miles long, and enjoy music, a beer garden, food and a health fair. A bike rodeo for kids ages 1 to 9 will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for kids ages 11 and younger, and $60 for a family of four.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.cornerstonelodi.com/calendar" target="_blank">Father's Day Community Barbecue</a></div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.cornerstonelodi.com/" target="_blank">Cornerstone Church</a> in Lodi has organized this free event featuring music, a car show and food. The barbecue will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Sunday at Lodi Middle School. </div>

<br />
Hello again.<br />
<br />
I hope you will forgive my absence.<br />
<br />
I have spent the past few months getting to know sweet Soledad, the newest addition to our family.<br />
<br />
She was born in March and is charming as can be - a cuddler from the start. And if, in my whole life, I am never ever lucky again, I still will have had more than my fair share of blessings.<br />
<br />
It's hard to believe that just a few months ago, this baby was still a question mark. What would she look like? What would her demeanor be?<br />
<br />
What would her big sister think of her?<br />
<br />
Of all my pregnancy anxieties - and even the second time around, there were many - worries over how Alice would react to a new sibling had me the most preoccupied.<br />
<br />
I'm the oldest of three, and while I am so deeply grateful to have siblings, I still felt guilty to be shaking up my little girl's world.<br />
<br />
We tried to make this transition a smooth one by telling Alice what to expect, explaining what it would be like to have a baby in the house. Books turned out to be very helpful (And, of course, Alice is already a real champ of a big sister):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOmDvHjsUdjfuC3LNz4jRa2rcnGe2iCOr0A6xk7hAlYHEKpidEMilTPloTrwK3tClMdkfDsAQ-qhlt49AlpzT6uasqw4jAXvnX-ZrtSu3JD61gTAqIrmLlKE4QdiplXPV-CBn12iL_rUx2/s1600/index.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOmDvHjsUdjfuC3LNz4jRa2rcnGe2iCOr0A6xk7hAlYHEKpidEMilTPloTrwK3tClMdkfDsAQ-qhlt49AlpzT6uasqw4jAXvnX-ZrtSu3JD61gTAqIrmLlKE4QdiplXPV-CBn12iL_rUx2/s200/index.jpeg" width="160" /></a></div>

A lot of books about new babies speak to the older sibling's worry and frustration about having a rival for mom and dad's time and affection. That's a big deal. But getting ready for baby is also joyful, and this book does a sweet job of celebrating that precious time. Unexpectedly, it also helped prepare Alice for the logistics of baby's arrival - in the story, the main character's mother goes to the hospital for a few days to have the baby while he stays home with Grandma. When it was time for me to go to the hospital, Alice barely shrugged: she knew it was coming and knew I'd be home again soon. (The Baby Sister is available through the <a href="http://www.ssjcpl.org/" target="_blank">Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library System</a>. Check it out.)<br />

It meanders through the routines of an infant's day from the perspective of an older sister (who tenderly mothers the doll her dad gave her when he and her mom came home with a real newborn). We have read this one so many times that Alice has it memorized. Listening to her "read" it breaks my heart.<br />

It's nicely open-ended with cheerful drawings and simple text designed to encourage conversation about what it's like to have a new baby at home - What do babies eat? Why do they cry? <br />
The weather has turned so spring-like that it's hard to believe we took these wintry pictures just a few weeks ago.<br />
<br />
We wanted Alice to see a little bit of snow before it melted (though there might be some left even now), and lots of local friends have recommended <a href="http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=551" target="_blank">Calaveras Big Trees State Park</a>, so we decided to check it out one weekend morning.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
At about an hour and a half northeast of Stockton, it was a manageable drive with a preschooler. (Even one who's prone to car-sickness). And once there, we found an easy enough trail for her to walk.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp-fG3PfHTK6ilKOyTf0SZtol8bAlDMAaPqx7TbJVcLn1h4GoCMqpQF4PoSdvO05IzuRRPXdTCYReBqlVW8kXBMgZsPZ4imBH8fYldizOpW_-hBCNGPi-xJ1bDwvmeFf9w35e-mdScsBdJ/s1600/IMG_7000.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Calaveras Big Trees State Park" border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp-fG3PfHTK6ilKOyTf0SZtol8bAlDMAaPqx7TbJVcLn1h4GoCMqpQF4PoSdvO05IzuRRPXdTCYReBqlVW8kXBMgZsPZ4imBH8fYldizOpW_-hBCNGPi-xJ1bDwvmeFf9w35e-mdScsBdJ/s400/IMG_7000.JPG" title="Calaveras Big Trees State Park" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The park was created in 1931 to preserve a grove of giant sequoias.<br />
<br />
I'm sure we'll be back - campsites open up this weekend, and it looks like the park and <a href="http://bigtrees.org/" target="_blank">its supporters</a> maintain a busy schedule of spring and summer activities - including some for kids and families.<br />
<br />

Last week I received an email alert from the Stockton Stride-Rite store, announcing a sale on <a href="http://www.saltwater-sandals.com/" target="_blank">Salt-Water sandals</a> (our favorite - the sale ends Monday, by the way.) And I couldn't help but be a little surprised. Springtime already? The weather <i>has</i> been a little warmer and a little brighter lately, and this nice, long weekend is supposed to be gorgeous. But I hear some winter rain is in store for us next week. In the meantime, enjoy the sun:<br />

According to the <a href="http://www.isletoncoc.org/spam.html" target="_blank">Isleton Chamber of Commerce,</a> this annual celebration has its roots in the floods of 1996. Displaced families, offered shelter at the Hotel Del Rio, noted that the labels on cans of Spam were the only food labels in their cupboards to survive water damage. And a festival was born. This year's event takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the <a href="http://www.hoteldelrio.com/information.html" target="_blank">Hotel Del Rio</a>, 209 Second Street in Isleton. Sweet Alice celebrated her big third birthday recently, and since we decided not to have a backyard party this year, we wanted to plan something special for her nursery school class. <br />
<br />
Last year, on the recommendation of a very smart mama friend, we sent her to school with <a href="http://www.stocktonmama.com/2012/02/birthday-cookies.html" target="_blank">ladybug cookies</a> from <a href="http://www.mandwdutchamericanbakery.com/" target="_blank">M&W Dutch American Bakery</a>. Adorable.<br />
<br />
But this year, she had a taste for something different, so we decided to try mini-cupcakes from <a href="http://www.facebook.com/bakersboutique" target="_blank">Baker's Boutique</a> in the <a href="http://www.shopstonecreekvillage.com/" target="_blank">Stone Creek Village</a> shopping center. Alice had a tough time deciding between chocolate and vanilla, so we ordered a dozen of each, topped with buttercream then dipped in hot-pink sanding sugar. <br />
<br />
We ordered on a Tuesday and picked up on a Thursday. <br />
<br />
At which point we shared this terrible <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Charlie_and_the_Chocolate_Factory_characters#Veruca_Salt" target="_blank">Veruca Salt</a> moment: When the cashier opened the pastry box to show Alice her gorgeous treats, my daughter exclaimed, "I don't <em>want</em> cupcakes!" <br />
<br />
Oh, man. Can I explain? Above the cash register at Baker's Boutique is a really beautiful Little Mermaid display cake, and Alice decided, then and there, that <em>that's</em> what she <em>really</em> wanted. Tell me you've been there.<br />

<br />
Nonetheless. <br />
<br />
She came around quickly. The cupcakes were as delicious - moist and light - as they were pretty, and the kiddos seemed to really enjoy them.<br />
<br />
(I should also admit to sampling a couple more cupcakes since then. My favorite is the chocolate BB - it's a chocolate cake, filled and topped with vanilla buttercream, then dipped in chocolate ganache. So tough to resist. Though I really should).<br />
<br />
Go to the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/bakersboutique" target="_blank">Baker's Boutique Facebook page</a> for updates on daily flavor selections, and to find out where you might find their mobile cupcake truck. <br />

<em>In the meantime, what do you think is the best cupcake in town? I feel like this is something I should get to the bottom of.</em> Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08172648663393764639noreply@blogger.com
