This Weekend With Kids

We're lucky to have out-of-town guests staying with us this weekend, so I think we might spend some time exploring a few of our favorite local places (Perhaps the Children's Museum of Stockton? Alice is always drawn to that bright reading nook).

Here's a little more of what's going on in and around town:

The museum will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, and admission is free. Take the opportunity to check out the more than 120 works of painting, sculpture and scrimshaw that are part of the National Exhibition of the American Society of Marine Artists (On display through March 3).  Or, from 3 to 4 p.m., find a seat at a special preview concert of the 2013 St. John's Music Festival, directed by Paul Kimball and featuring performances for wind orchestra and choir.

True story: I always wanted to be good at ice-skating, but never quite managed. This sounds like a fun, low-anxiety way to give it a try. From 12:30 to 1 p.m. on Saturday, the Oak Park Ice Arena is offering beginner lessons. The $7 cost includes a lesson and skate rental - and allows you to stay and practice during the 1-4 p.m. public skate session.

The more adventurous among you can check out a beginner's BMX clinic at Manteca's Spreckels Park on Sunday. Designed for kids ages 4 and older to learn the basics of BMX, registration will open from 8:30 to 9 a.m., with the clinic scheduled from 9 to 11. The cost is $5 for the clinic, plus an additional $5 to race afterward. 742 Spreckels Ave. in Manteca.
